Pedong Tourist Destination
Pedong is a small village situated in the hills at the border of West Bengal and Sikkim, located on the famous Silk Route connecting India and Tibet. The nearest important station is Kalimpong, located 22 km away, and it takes about 3 hours to reach from Siliguri by public transport, which is around 100 km from Siliguri. The usual route is via Kalimpong, with regular jeep and bus services available from Siliguri. The fares are typically Rs. 120 for jeeps and Rs. 90 for buses. A direct bus from NJP to Pedong departs around 2 PM. All vehicles take NH 31 (previously known as NH 31A) through Mahananda Reserve Forest, Kalijhora, Rambhi, and Teesta to Kalimpong, where passengers can change to buses or jeeps to reach Pedong, with a fare of around Rs. 50. The route goes via Algara, another small village near Kalimpong.
It costs around Rs. 2800 to reserve a car along this route. The second road goes via Garubathan, Neora Valley, Lava, and Algara to Pedong, typically used by jeeps or buses if the primary route is blocked. This route can also be reserved for around Rs. 4000 (round trip).

Climate and When to Visit
Located around 1200 meters above sea level, Pedong offers a pleasant climate during the hot Indian summer. A light blanket might be needed during this time. The area glows with lush greenery during the monsoon, although landslides can occur in June and July, so be aware of safe driving routes. Winters are cold, but visitors can enjoy clear and breathtaking views of the mountain ranges. The best times to visit are during spring or autumn.
About Pedong
Pedong is a small and quiet village primarily known as an educational hub for the surrounding area. The houses are mostly wooden with asbestos roofs. There is a small market area where basic necessities are available. St. George’s High School, a boarding school over 100 years old, has around 2000 students. Other institutions include St. Xavier's School, offering education up to the 10th standard, and a government degree college affiliated with North Bengal University, which began its first session in July 2015, offering courses in arts and science.
Places Nearby
Pedong is ideal for spending two to three idle days before visiting nearby tourist spots like Rishop, Lava, or even Sikkim. With military permission, one can hire a car to Nathula Pass. Cross Hill, known for its characteristic cross, is a fabulous viewpoint. Other places of interest include the 300-year-old Sangchen Dorjee Monastery, Damsang Fort (locally called Damsang Gadi), Sillery Gaon (nicknamed New Darjeeling), Tin Chuley, and Reshi River. Comfortable resorts are available for visitors.
